Nirvana — американская рок-группа, продвигавшая стили гранж и панк и вошедшая благодаря хиту «Smells Like Teen Spirit» (1991) в музыкальный мейнстрим 1990-х. Nirvana стала наиболее известной группой, играющей гранж; другие группы из Сиэтла, играющие в этом стиле, такие как Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam и Soundgarden, тоже стали достаточно популярными, и, в результате, всю первую половину девяностых годов после выхода альбома «Nevermind» в США на радио и музыкальном телевидении гранжу выделялась довольно значительная часть эфирного времени.

В начале 90-х Курт Кобейн оказался в глазах СМИ не просто музыкантом, а «голосом поколения», а Nirvana — флагманом «поколения Х».

Недолгая, но яркая история группы прервалась в 1994 году, в связи со смертью Курта Кобейна. Но в последующие годы известность группы лишь росла. Через восемь лет незавершённая демо-запись песни «You Know You're Right», над которой группа работала за два месяца до смерти Кобейна (30 января), заняла первые строчки хит-парадов США и Европы. Считая со времени выхода их дебютного альбома записи Nirvana были проданы в количестве более 60 миллионов экземпляров (по состоянию на 26 сентября 2006), включая 10 миллионов экземпляров одного только альбома «Nevermind», проданного в США.
